Vietnamese Resort Gives Visitors a Taste of Local Life (Literally)

The Anam, a luxury beach resort in Vietnam, is giving guests the opportunity to live like a local. The vacation spot’s “A Day in the Life” allows travelers to meet with a local family they’ve connected to via a profile and spend the whole day preparing and eating meals.

To start, guests feast on banh mi baguettes, a type of Vietnamese sandwich, at the host family’s favorite bakery. The morning continues with sips from traditional Vietnamese iced coffee and the hosts’ regular café.

For the afternoon meal, guests and their hosts visit the local markets where they’re introduced to local farmers and artisans. The hosts act as liaisons between the travelers and the culture of local community. What’s picked is going into a cooking class where the guests can learn Vietnamese food and their children can play alongside locals. The kids get to teach each other their favorite songs and games.

The visiting families get to go home with authentic recipes their hosts offer to share, including a full recipe book. Dishes include bò nướng lá lốt (grilled beef in betel leaf), bún bò Huế (Hue-style beef noodle soup) and bánh xèo (crispy Vietnamese pancakes).

The program is part of a broader initiative to support local Vietnamese people and businesses. The resort also offers “The Anam Art Trail,” a local art and photography tour.
