Vik Retreats Expands Uruguay as Year-Round Destination

Vik Retreats has announced that Estancia Vik José Ignacio and Bahia Vik José Ignacio, its private luxury retreats in the fishing village of José Ignacio, Uruguay will welcome visitors throughout the year.

Located 20 kilometers northeast of Punta del Este, José Ignacio is often described as a place where St. Tropez meets Marlborough Country because of the beaches, landscapes and culture. Over the years, tourist demand has grown substantially, spurring Estancia Vik and Bahia Vik to open year-round, offering travelers the opportunity to enjoy a range of experiences.

Situated on 4,000 acres of rolling hills, Estancia Vik is a traditional Spanish colonial structure featuring white adobe walls and a red tin roof designed by architect Marcelo Daglio with Carrie and Alex Vik. It offers 12 suites and a collection of Uruguayan art. Bahia Vik José Ignacio reflects contemporary beach living, spanning 10 acres of dunes on the peninsula, facing east, south and west, with vistas across the Southern Atlantic Ocean from José Ignacio to Punta del Este. It offers 15 bungalows tucked into the beach dunes, with one central building. The Shack Yoga and Wellness at Bahia Vik, a new wellness sanctuary and spa, offers bespoke wellness experiences for guests. It features a yoga studio, a fitness center, personal training, retreats and workshops, a full-service spa and a cold-pressed juice and tea bar.

Activities for guests include horseback-riding tours, beach walks, kayaking and canoeing, whale-watching excursions from July to November and biking on the country backroads. They can also enjoy traditional asado barbecues, private wine tastings, cooking classes and al-fresco dining under the stars. They can play tennis on Estancia’s grass courts or try their hand at golf. Visitors can also explore local attractions including the Pablo Atchugarry Foundation, art galleries and artist ateliers, and historical sites all the way to Montevideo or explore the towns of Garzon, Minas and San Carlos.

Estancia Vik and Bahia Vik are accessible via the Punta del Este airport, a 40-minute drive along the coast or by highway. Alternatively, guests may fly to the capital city of Montevideo located one and a half hours away, with several flights including direct service from Miami and Madrid.
