Wales is a treasure trove of classic castles and estate homes that have been converted into accommodations, so fans of old-world luxury will be pleased to hear that the new owner of a 122-room mansion once dubbed the “Welsh Versailles” plans to turn it into a new luxury hotel.
According to the North Wales Weekly News, the Grade II listed Kinmel Hall and its Grade I listed stables in St George near Abergele were bought earlier this year for $2.4 million by an undisclosed buyer at a London auction. The Hall is based on the Palais de Versailles near Paris.
The hall reportedly attracted widespread interest, including from India and Canada. It is the largest private residential property in Wales, with 18 acres of land.
The present building was designed by WE Nesfield in the 1870s with adjoining Venetian gardens. The substantial adjoining stable block is attributed to the architect William Burn and was built in the early 1850s in a Neo-Palladian style.
