Fresh From Fiji

Castaway Island gives guests the opportunity to relax.

Castaway Island gives guests the opportunity to relax (below) and the chance to enjoy water sports (here). Only 10 percent of the island is occupied by the resort.

Outrigger Resorts’ Castaway Island, Fiji Resort has just reopened after a long cleanup following February’s tropical cyclone Winston. With the repairs come some mighty fine upgrades, including those of 14 bures (those are traditional Fijian-style homes with high ceilings and thatched roofs). Nice new add-ons include full-length windows, tiled en-suite bathrooms and, our favorite touch, beds that are now positioned to get optimal views of the island. For the best vistas at Castaway, we suggest the Beachfront Bures, where the beds face the ocean and hammocks are on hand to sink in to the tropical vibe. Top Tip: Only 10 percent of this private island is occupied by the resort, meaning the rest is untouched. The resort provides kayaks, snorkeling gear and paddleboards. For more adventure-minded travelers, PADI diving is also available. For a day on land, we suggest a morning hike followed by a quick game of tennis or lawn volleyball.
