This welcoming lakefront hotel on Maggiore’s northern shore is spread out over three buildings, each decorated in a distinctive style. The property has excellent facilities, including three swimming pools, two saunas and four restaurants. Service is exceptional.

Location 9/100

The hotel is in the pretty town of Ascona on Lake Maggiore’s northern shore. It commands lovely views from its lakefront location.

Style & character 8/100

Built in 1971, the hotel is spread out over three buildings. Each has its own distinctive style and décor. The main wing features colourful and vibrantly furnished rooms created by Swiss architect and designer Carlo Rampazzi, with eclectic furnishings combining elements from different eras. The décor in the right wing is more reserved, with blue, green and yellow colour schemes and a gentle choice of palettes for fabrics. The adjoining Eden Roc Marina is furnished in a fresh and young marine style reminiscent of the 1960s.

Service & facilities 10/100

I found the service to be impeccable; restaurant staff were professional and attentive. The hotel has plenty of facilities including a private beach, landing stage and lakefront gardens. There’s a Spa with hairdresser, three swimming pools, female-only and mixed saunas and a well-equipped gym looking out towards the lake.

All manner of activities can be organised at the hotel’s affiliated water-sports school, including banana boating, tubing, stand-up paddle and water-skiing. Boats can be rented out with or without a skipper. Staff can advise on hiking and mountain biking routes, and Vespa and motorbike rental can be organised. A couple of golf courses are within easy reach of the hotel. There are four meeting rooms equipped with state-of-the-art technology.

Food & drink 9/100

With four restaurants, there is plenty of choice. Located on the lakefront, the historical La Casetta serves fresh pasta dishes and grilled seafood and freshwater specialities. I dined at La Brezza, which serves creative Mediterranean cuisine with a Sicilian touch, and tried the lobster with strawberries and elderflower followed by the king mackerel risotto. The more informal La Marina, with a retro 1970s look and outdoor lounge that is a great spot for an aperitif, specialises in homemade pasta dishes, while Eden Roc Restaurant serves French cuisine. The buffet breakfast features pastries, eggs, cold cuts, cheeses, freshly made juices and cereal.
