Badrutt’s Palace Hotel Debuts New Serlas Wing

Badrutt’s Palace Hotel in St. Moritz, Switzerland, has unveiled the largest expansion in its 129-year history. Designed by Milan-based ACPV Architects, the Serlas Wing expansion includes 25 contemporary luxury guestrooms and suites, as well as an underground pedestrian tunnel system.

The culmination of seven years of intensive planning, the expansion project includes the six-story addition of the Serlas Wing and an underground pedestrian tunnel system providing guests a discreet and exclusive passage to the village square of St. Moritz and to Chesa Veglia, the oldest farmhouse in St. Moritz. Fun fact: Spanning nearly 6,165 feet, the underground pedestrian tunnel system includes the longest hotel escalator in Switzerland.

The six-story Serlas Wing blends into the existing local architecture. Taking cues from the surrounding environment, the building’s portico has been constructed with regional Dorato Valmalenco stone, dotted with deep, carved-in windows and augmented by bronze details. The portico’s cantilevered wooden roof, while constructed with locally sourced materials, also presents a forward-looking esthetic, signaling a departure from the hotel's tradition.

Each guestroom and suite showcases furnishings from b&B Italia and Loro Piana Interiors. All guestrooms and suites also include wool-fabric wall-paneled corridors and handcrafted upholstery by Loro Piana Interiors for the curtains, headboards, bed skirts and chairs. In addition, the wood for the roof of the penthouse suites was finished using the traditional Japanese technique Yakisugi (also known as Shou Sugi Ban). This technique of controlled charring has been used in Japan for centuries to make wood more resistant.

The Serlas Wing is home to four restaurant concepts and a bar.
