COMO Hotels Expands Portfolio With Castello del Nero in Italy

Castello del Nero Hotel & Spa has long been treasured as one of Tuscany’s most luxurious and historic retreats. Located in the Chianti wine region of Italy, a 30-minute drive from the Renaissance cities of Florence and Siena, the Castello del Nero functioned as a private estate for centuries before it was transformed into a luxury hotel in 2016 by the Trotta family. Now, it’s part of the COMO Hotels & Resorts family, after the Singapore-based group purchased the property in 2018. According to the official press release, COMO founder Christina Ong “always cultivated a strong allegiance to Italy” and stayed at Castello Del Nero on a private family holiday in 2007, where she “formed a strong connection with the Tuscan estate.”

COMO Castello Del Nero is the 15th hotel for the luxury hospitality group, which also operates properties in Thailand, Bali, Bhutan, The Maldives, London, Perth, Turks and Caicos, and Miami Beach. The 12th-century castello is the focal point of the 740-acre estate, with 50 rooms and suites newly decorated by Milanese designer Paolo Navone, who sought to enhance the interiors with a contemporary COMO touch. Facilities include tennis courts, a heated outdoor swimming pool, and a COMO Shambhala Retreat offering comprehensive wellness programs for extended stays.

The F&B outlets are a highlight; the Michelin-starred La Torre restaurant is overseen by executive chef Giovanni Luca Di Pirro, who sources most of the kitchen’s produce from the on-site garden, beehives, and olive groves. In addition to this farm-to-table culinary experience, the hotel offers two casual restaurants: La Taverna for traditional Italian fare and The Pavilion for light Mediterranean cuisine in the summer months. Note: COMO Castello Del Nero has developed a range of guided cultural excursions to provide guests with an authentic local experience.
