London’s Hotel Café Royal has unveiled a major redesign of its lobby, as well as Laurent at Café Royal, a brand-new restaurant from Chef Laurent Tourondel. Both the new lobby and restaurant were designed by architect and interior designer, Piero Lissoni.
The New Lobby
Designed and overseen by Lissoni, the new lobby cost approximately $6.6 million and was inspired by the lobbies of the world’s Palace hotels, according to the Hotel Café Royal. As visitors arrive through the double-height revolving door, they are first greeted by a view of the bespoke Murano glass chandelier. Designed by Italian firm Vistosi, the chandelier weighs over 770 pounds and is set above a table at the center of the room designed by Lissoni, displaying flowers by Hotel Café Royal’s in-house florist, Jamie Aston.
The back of the room holds the reception and guest relations desks flanked on each side by large bookshelves containing a library produced and curated by Maison Assouline. To complete the lobby, waiting areas with furniture pieces designed by Paolo Castelli and Italian makers Poltrona Frau, Cassina and Living Divani are available to guests and visitors alike.

Laurent at Café Royal
Above the new lobby space, Lissoni’s work continues into the new restaurant from Chef Laurent Tourondel, who began his career at the hotel. The restaurant will offer relaxed all-day dining with seasonally-driven menus that offer fresh produce, meats, and local, sustainably sourced seafood in addition to an Argentine parrilla grill.
Designed by contemporary Italian architect and designer Piero Lissoni, the new restaurant is located on the first floor of Hotel Café Royal, where an extensive refurbishment has created an entirely new space. Lissoni’s previous global projects are varied and extend to yachts, residential properties, and luxury hotels including the Conservatorium in Amsterdam, owned by The Set hotels. In addition to his architectural work, Lissoni has also worked in furniture design for companies such as Boffi, Cassina, B&B Italia and Flos.
