Hotel Eden Launches Dedicated Caravaggio Art Tour

Dorchester Collection has unveiled the “Caravaggio – Rebel and Rome” trail, the next in its series of bespoke, private walking tours designed for guests to follow in the footsteps of legendary artists. Guests at Hotel Eden in Rome can discover the story of the artist’s life on the “Caravaggio – Rebel and Rome” trail. The guided tour delves deep into Caravaggio’s rags-to-riches daring life, inspired and seduced by a cast of colorful characters—from wealthy patrons to gamblers, models and fortune-tellers—and inextricably linked to the city he called home.

Guests will discover how, amidst his chaotic and exceptionally short lifetime, armed with an incredible talent, he created ground-breaking work that revolutionized the history of art. Guests will also discover why Martin Scorsese thought Caravaggio would have been a great filmmaker, and how a match of tennis led to Caravaggio’s death sentence.

The adventure begins at Hotel Eden as visitors retrace significant moments of Caravaggio’s Roman sojourn, from the newest discoveries, supported by recently unearthed court documents and lawsuits, to the sites of the workshops where Caravaggio trained, and even to the very spot that caused the artist’s exile from Rome. With dialogue in the company of an experienced guide, one-on-one or as part of a small, private group, guests will be able to pause and enjoy the beauty of Rome, while absorbing anecdotes about the artist’s life and career. Each itinerary will be adapted, so the trails are able to cater for both intrepid explorers who wish to refine their knowledge, as well as novices who may have visited Rome before but never delved deeper.

Helen Smith, chief customer experience officer, said: “We were inspired by Caravaggio’s only known ceiling painting, located a mere stone’s throw away Hotel Eden, in a grand building that was originally part of the aristocratic Villa Ludovisi Estate, on whose original land our hotel now stands. This wonderfully unique experience gives our guests the chance to get to know the ‘real’ Caravaggio.”

“Caravaggio – Rebel and Rome” will be open to visitors until December 31, 2022. In the coming months, Dorchester Collection’s series of “Follow in the footsteps of Legendary Artists” will be expanded to include “Rodin – Love and Torment” at Le Meurice, Paris (in autumn) and “Hepworth – Rhythm, Movement and Space” at 45 Park Lane, London (in winter 2022/23).
