Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has entered into a long-term management agreement with Attestor Limited to rebrand and manage Hotel Cristallo in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. The historic property will be refurbished after it closes in the second quarter of 2023. It will be rebranded as a Mandarin Oriental resort in summer 2025, ahead of the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics.
Mandarin Oriental Cristallo, Cortina will be the group’s first alpine resort and expands Mandarin Oriental’s presence in Italy. The property sits above the most recognized mountain village in the Dolomites, a short walk away from Cortina d’Ampezzo, known as the “Queen of the Dolomites,” which is home to many restaurants, luxury boutiques and local arts and crafts. Venice Marco Polo Airport is situated one and a half hours away by car.
Hotel Cristallo was built in 1901 in Art Nouveau style by the Menardi family and was a well-known ski destination in the 1930s. After the Olympic Games of 1956, the Hotel entered its “golden era” as a popular ski destination, hosting royals and celebrities, including Peter Sellers, Frank Sinatra, Saul Bellow and Vladimir Nabokov. It has featured as a backdrop for several films as well. In 2021, the property was acquired by funds managed by Attestor Limited, which also owns Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como.
Upon reopening in 2025, the hotel will have 83 guestrooms, many with balconies, including 30 suites with views of the Dolomites. The resort will also offer a range of restaurants and bars, besides flexible spaces for entertainment and events. It will also have a spa and wellness facility with an indoor-outdoor swimming pool.
Activities include skiing, golf, cross-country walking and hiking, tennis, ice skating, mountain climbing and a children’s club. The Dolomites guarantee snow throughout the season and have more than 745 miles of interconnected slopes.
