Mandarin Oriental to Open in Egypt

Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has announced a management agreement to rebrand the historic Shepheard Hotel in Cairo, Egypt. This will be the group’s first hotel in Egypt and further expands the brand’s portfolio in the region.

The Shepheard Hotel first opened its doors in 1841 and remains a popular landmark in the city. The property is undergoing extensive renovation and Paris-based interior designer, Sybille de Margerie, will be responsible for preserving the building’s heritage design while enhancing the facilities and services. Expected to welcome visitors in 2024, the hotel will reopen as Mandarin Oriental Shepheard, Cairo.

Located on the eastern shore of River Nile, in the heart of Downtown Cairo, the hotel will feature 188 rooms and 88 suites. Many of these will have balconies, with views over the city, the Nile and Gezira island. The hotel is located close to the city’s attractions such as the Egyptian Museum, Khan el-Khalili Souq and Al-Azhar Mosque, besides key commercial buildings, retail experiences and dining options.

Mandarin Oriental Shepheard, Cairo will feature five restaurants and bars, including a rooftop restaurant for al fresco dining, and an exclusive club lounge. Function spaces, including a rooftop ballroom, will also be available for conferences and social gatherings of all sizes.

The Spa at Mandarin Oriental will provide eight treatment suites and offer customized experiences and signature treatments. Wellness facilities include an indoor lap pool, a rooftop swimming pool, a beauty salon, fitness center and a kids’ club.

According to James Riley, group chief executive of Mandarin Oriental, the project presents an opportunity for the brand to expand in the Middle East and Africa.
