Six Senses Douro Valley Unveils New Vineyard Wing

(Six Senses Douro Valley )

Since it opened in July 2015, Six Senses Douro Valley has established itself as a sought-after destination in Portugal’s famous wine region, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the oldest wine-producing places on the planet. Overlooking the scenic Douro River in Lamego, the resort comprises a 19th century manor house on a sun-baked 19-acre estate. There are three restaurants, multiple swimming pools and an outdoor yoga pavilion, while the spa offers multi-day programs and locally inspired therapies in 10 treatment rooms.

Given the resort’s popularity, it comes as no surprise that it's expanded, recently unveiling a new Vineyard Wing with seven suites, three more guestrooms, and a meeting and event space accommodating 70 people. Conceived by New York design agency Clodagh, the project took one year and features authentic touches in the decor, like antique vineyard tools and wall art resembling wine crates. These new rooms have expansive outside living areas. Nice touch: The in-room mini bars can be customized with your choice of fine local wines and gourmet Douro treats.

Overseen by general manager Nick Yarnell, Six Senses Douro Valley now has 60 guestrooms and suites. A highlight is the wine program curated by a dedicated wine team, so that visitors can experience various vineyards and learn about the region’s rich wine heritage. Other activities include mountain biking, helicopter tours, and river cruises. The Six Senses brand was acquired by IHG (InterContinental Hotels Group) for $300 million in 2019, and the portfolio comprises 18 hotels and 30 spas in 21 countries around the world. In the pipeline are 25 additional properties, including hotels in London and the Loire Valley in France.
