Soneva Fushi Touts Opening of World's Largest Overwater Villas

On September 25, 2020, Soneva Fushi will unveil what it says are the largest one- and two-bedroom overwater villas in the world. These eight new Water Retreats will also be the first overwater villas to open at Soneva Fushi.

A new innovation in the design of the 6,286-square-foot One-Bedroom Water Retreats and the 9,224-square-foot Two-Bedroom Water Retreats include raising the accommodations high enough above the ocean, so that the waves do not break against the underside (as generally occurs in overwater villas), which helps to reduce noise and vibration. Further, the walls use recycled Styrofoam as insulation, which helps keep the interiors cooler and serves to muffle the sound of wind and waves.

All the new villas still come with a number of Soneva’s signature elements: A water slide that leads directly into the open sea below; large outdoor bathrooms; and a master bedroom with a retractable roof to allow for stargazing right from bed. The pool deck comes complete with daybeds, while catamaran nets let guests sit right above the waves.

Good to know: Soneva has implemented extensive new guidelines, processes and procedures in the wake of COVID-19 (coronavirus), including PCR tests on arrival to ensure that each of its private-island resorts is COVID-19-free.

Located in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Soneva Fushi has 71 private villas (63 island villas and eight Water Retreats) ranging in size from one to nine bedrooms. Each of the island villas comes with its own stretch of beach, outdoor garden and water garden bathrooms, the majority have their own pools, and are hidden among the foliage.

Guests can use bicycles or tricycles to explore the island. Other highlights include the outdoor Cinema Paradiso, exploring the sky at the high-tech Observatory, the homemade chocolate and ice cream rooms, and the eight restaurants and three bars. Soneva’s floating villa concept, Soneva in Aqua, is a two-cabin yacht that sets sail from Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani. There’s also the children’s Den, which comes with a Lego room, dress-up room, two pools, a water slide and more.
