Located in northern Botswana, the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve is renowned for its high concentration of wildlife and pretty scenery—from riparian forests and lagoons to pristine grasslands. The region offers a complementary contrast to the Okavango Delta, making it a good add-on to a Botswana safari itinerary. Forming a natural boundary between Namibia and Botswana on the Linyanti River, this remote concession is also known for its large herds of elephants (there are important elephant corridors in the region).
It’s in this scenic destination where DumaTau, a camp operated by Wilderness Safaris, has welcomed guests since 1997. Last November, Wilderness announced that DumaTau would close for a comprehensive upgrade, alongside the creation of an exclusive new sister camp—equipped with just four tented suites—called Little DumaTau. The grand unveiling will take place on August 1, 2020.
The setting for both camps will afford private access to the Zibadianja Lagoon and more than 13 miles along the Savute Channel. Powered 100 percent by solar energy, the camps will be part of Wilderness Safaris’ premier portfolio. Expect enlarged rooms (double the size, with comfortable lounges) and bigger bathrooms equipped with both indoor and outdoor showers. Each room will now come with a deck and plunge pool.
A stand-out at DumaTau will be the new spa and wellness center. Situated between the camps, this retreat will offer a deli, store, and swimming pool overlooking the water. There will also be a gym—a rare amenity in safari lodges. Other highlights will be the fire deck on the Linyanti River and the Star Bed experience, for brave souls to admire the vast shimmering expanse of the southern African skies—and soak up the sounds of the night.
