Hurtigruten is thrilled to announce the impending launch of their brand-new ship, MS Roald Amundsen. Named after one of the greatest heroes in polar exploration history, she will usher in the next era of exploration travel and set a new standard for environmentally-conscious expedition cruising. MS Roald Amundsen will offer a quieter, smoother, safer, and cleaner experience than ever before, and travel to the most remote areas of our planet. The design of MS Roald Amundsen’s hull, her energy savings on board, and her use of electric propulsion will reduce fuel emissions by 20% and allow guests—limited to just 500 in Antarctica—to sail without engine noise for short periods of time.
In addition to advanced green technology, she will feature large observation decks, all outside staterooms and suites, an infinity pool, three restaurants, a wellness area, and an immersive science center, offering the modern-day adventure traveler unprecedented experiences. Read on for more information about the world’s first hybrid electric-powered cruise ship, and learn about what guests can look forward to when they stay on board this base camp at sea.
Onboard Amenities
There will be many ways to pass the time when joining an expedition cruise on MS Roald Amundsen, as her onboard amenities are plentiful. She will feature an infinity pool and two hot tubs, perfect for gazing out at the spectacular passing scenery, as well as a gym—complete with a top-deck running track, a wellness treatment room, a sauna, and multiple observation decks, including a covered indoor/outdoor deck. Guests will be able to relax, enjoy a beverage, and share the experiences of their day with other guests in the Explorer Lounge, or meet up with the expedition team in the Science Center.
Science Center
An advanced Science Center is at the core of the onboard experience. Packed with state-of-the-art technology and interactive tools, the Science Center serves as a focal point of both learning and entertainment. Our expedition team will be on hand for lectures and to answer any questions about history, geology, oceanography, physics, and anything else that stirs guests’ interest on our fascinating journeys.
And, on MS Roald Amundsen, learning isn’t confined to simply the Science Center; she comes equipped with a fleet of Blueye underwater drones! Each one features a wide-angle video camera that will stream true-color live images to the ship’s TV screens and all cabin TVs, giving every guest on board the opportunity to view the incredible wildlife that lives beneath the water’s surface.
Three Restaurants
Three restaurants will offer a culinary journey as exciting as the expedition cruise itself. Each restaurant will serve delicious, cuisine created by expert chefs:
- Named after Henrik Adolf Lindstrøm, Norwegian chef and polar explorer, Lindstrøm will be a specialty restaurant, perfect for celebrating special occasions, and will serve the best of traditional Norwegian and modern cuisine.
- Fredheim will offer international delights and named after a legendary Svalbard hunting station, where friends would gather and socialize.
- Aune will be the main dining restaurant, where most meals will be held, and will serve Norwegian food in a relaxed, informal setting.
Cabins
Discover the true comfort in cabins and suites that are designed to serve as a perfect place to rest up for the next day’s adventure. Expedition Suites, Arctic Superior cabins, and Polar Outside cabins each create the ideal space to unwind in, after a full day of exploration.
Classic natural Scandinavian materials like wool, granite, oak, and pine are used to create a welcoming and harmonious atmosphere in each cabin and throughout the ship. All cabins have a window or porthole to ensure that every guest has a chance to enjoy incredible views of the areas in which we sail; in fact, half of the cabins on board will feature balconies, and some even have their own private hot tub!
Expedition Team
Our expedition team members are adventurers who thrive in the wilderness, and are dedicated to creating a relaxed and educational atmosphere. They will enhance the guest experience by providing illuminating information about the destinations in which we sail, sharing their expertise in history, geology, marine biology, oceanography, history, ornithology, photography, and much more.
