South Africa Is Now Open to All International Travelers

The South African Government announcement that the country is now open to all international leisure and business travelers from across the globe. The opening follows South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement on Wednesday that South Africa would be moving to augmented alert level 1, thus opening up international borders for all countries from 11 November 2020.

Travelers, South African Tourism CEO Sisa Ntshona said in a press announcement, can again “enjoy the wide-open spaces, scenic landscape [and] unique and authentic cultural experiences that South Africa has to offer.”

What you need to know:

All travelers coming into the country will need to supply a negative COVID-19 PCR test not older than 72 hours from the date of departure from their country. In the event of the traveler's failure to submit a certificate as proof of a negative test, the traveler will be required to quarantine him or herself at his or her own costs for 10 days.

Upon arrival in the port of entry, the traveler will be screened for any COVID-19 symptoms or for contact with people who have been infected with the COVID-19 virus. Travelers will also need to provide proof of accommodation address should they need to self-quarantine at the time of arrival in the country. Should the traveler display any COVID-19–related symptoms or been in contact with an infected person(s), they will be expected to take a mandatory COVID-19 test at the traveler’s cost. If the COVID-19 test comes back positive, the traveler will be subjected to a 10-day quarantine at a designated site, also at the traveler’s cost.

International air travel is restricted to O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, King Shaka International Airport outside of Durban and Cape Town International Airport.

Note, however, when it comes to cruising, all passenger ships for international leisure purposes are prohibited from disembarking any international passengers at any South African seaport.
