Nepal Drops Quarantine for Vaccinated Travelers

The Nepal Tourist Board has shared on social media, "It’s official! The wait is finally over and #Nepal is now open to those who wish to visit." According to an infographic shared by the tourism board, the country is dropping its quarantine-upon-arrival for fully vaccinated travelers who are entering by air or land. Unvaccinated and not fully vaccinated travelers arriving by air will have to quarantine for 10 days, while entry by land border is not permitted.

Fully vaccinated travelers can before or upon arrival can acquire a visa. They will also need their vaccination certificate, a hotel booking, travel insurance, a negative PCR test from within 72 of travel and the “CCMC” (COVID-19 Crisis Management Center) form. (A traveler is considered fully vaccinated 14 days after their final dose of a COVID-19 inoculation.)

Upon arrival in Nepal, travelers will need to take a rapid antigen test at their port of entry or at their hotel. Note: Local destinations may have their own protocols, so be sure to check for specifics before travel. The Nepal Tourist Board notes “they are not restrictive,” but says its best to remain updated. Current local guidelines include wearing face masks, maintaining social distancing and frequent handwashing.

Partially vaccinated and unvaccinated travelers will have to obtain visas from Nepal’s embassies in their home countries and will still have to quarantine for 10 days in a government-approved hotel. They will need a negative PCR test before they can travel about the country.

According to the Nepali Times, the country received nearly 1.2 million tourists in 2019, but only 220,000 in 2020—and most of whom arrived before the lockdown in March. For 2021, there have been only 70,000 visitors, with being either mountaineers or repeat trekkers.
