Cala Luna Boutique Hotel & Villas implemented a mass solar panel installation last December as part of its goal to achieve carbon neutrality by late 2019. The eco-boutique hotel set up 1,400 solar panels, which it estimates will offset 34 tons of its energy usage.
The Costa Rican solar power company Solar Ing led the venture. Its saline-protected, marine-grade solar panels are especially designed to resist salt water damage and rank within the top 10 in the world.
“Travelers are more socially and environmentally conscious than ever, seeking vacations that have minimal impact on the planet’s resources,” said the hotel’s general manager Federico Pilurzu. “At Cala Luna, we strive to take sustainability to new levels and inspire our visitors to connect with nature in a meaningful way.”
Cala Luna’s solar project is intended to help support Costa Rica’s own mission of nationwide carbon neutrality by 2021. In addition to the panels, the hotel is taking other measures to hold its ICT sustainability certification, including offering hybrid electric cars on site for guest to rent.
Two and a half miles south of Liberia Airport, Cala Luna sits along Tamarindo Beach within Costa Rica’s Playa Langosta and Baulas National Park. Its commitment to the local community and environment has helped it attain the highest possible sustainable tourism certification from the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT).
