Pretty cool news for eco-conscious travelers: Svart, touted as the world’s first energy-positive hotel, has shared some details, including who will lead its interior design.
The hotel will be located in Arctic Norway at the base of the Svartisen glacier and will house about 100 rooms, an indoor-outdoor spa, four restaurants, an education center and a “design laboratory,” as well as two electric boats to facilitate guest transfers and activities. The glass-fronted, circular property, which will float on stilts above the Holandsfjorden fjord, will open to guests in late 2022.
The hotel, which is designed by the Norwegian architect firm Snøhetta, will also have a sustainable farm producing ingredients for the hotel’s restaurants.
Guests can enjoy Arctic experiences year-round, from ice climbing on the glacier to practicing yoga in the midnight sun, as well as wildlife-spotting, diving and fishing.
What’s cool: Svart aims to have a low-impact design, which will allow it to produce an energy surplus, consuming approximately 85 percent less energy than traditional hotels. It aims to be fully off-grid, carbon-neutral and zero-waste within the first five years of operation. Svart says the ambition is to go further, with a goal of developing scalable technology that will apply to other buildings to support a further reduction in energy consumption.
The Denmark-based design studio Space Copenhagen, founded by Peter Bundgaard and Signe Bindslev Henriken in 2005, has been charged with the entire interior vision for Svart. Space Copenhagen is responsible for some of the most ambitious and award-winning design projects of recent years, with previous work including the 11 Howard Hotel in New York, The Stratford in London and the original Noma restaurant in Copenhagen.
Good to know: Svart will be open to overnight guests, day-visitors, and to the local community.
