Splendido, A Belmond Hotel, Portofino Gets a Makeover

Splendido, A Belmond Hotel, Portofino, will unveil the first phase of a multi-year renovation overseen by Martin Brudnizki Design Studio when it opens for the season on June 8, 2023. The transformation includes the pool area overlooking the Ligurian Bay, Splendido Grill restaurant, and the Baronessa Suite.

Newly redesigned by Italian landscape designer Marco Bay, Splendido’s iconic 1970s pool will be updated to reflect the deep green-blue tones of the sea below, while the surrounding sun terrace use contrasting hues of pink, red and white stone embedded with mosaic sea creatures.

Adjoining the swimming pool terrace, the Splendido Grill restaurant has traditional hand-painted green and white tile frontages inspired by Albissola ceramics found in the hotel’s guestrooms. The restaurant’s surroundings blend with the interior detailing and furniture; the retractable sunroof, in acorn green and terracotta tones set against a bright white background, contrasts the red-flecked composite stone floor. At night, striped Murano glass pendant lights illuminate the terrace, furnished with Bonacina chairs with piped cushions in coral and green tones and tables set with custom-designed bone china.

The newly redesigned Baronessa Suite, one of the property’s signature suites with a king bedroom, separate living room and private terrace, has rich fabric wall coverings, frescoes, curios and antiques dating back to mid-20th century. Antique furniture, curated from local auction houses and estate sales, is reupholstered in bespoke fabrics, including a statement chaise lounger, carved timber side table and a petite vanity table with complementary footstool. A carved timber headboard depicting unfurling agapanthus leaves is set against the soft fabric of the upholstered insert whilst painted Genovese antique bedside tables are topped by Albissola table lamps. The suite also features an expansive terrace, furnished with rattan seating and a dining area, as well as a private garden with direct access to the pool.
