Planning a trip to Costa Rica? Nature-loving adventurers will want to make a note of this new address. Inspired by the luxury canvas lodges of Africa and Asia, Nayara Tented Camp will be one of the first of its kind in Central America when it debuts in December 2019. Owner Leo Ghitis tapped Luxury Frontiers—a so-called “experiential lodging expert” championing low-impact, sustainable design—to conceive the project. (The company has worked with high-end hospitality brands like Four Seasons, Belmond, Abercrombie & Kent and Wilderness Safaris to create lodgings in destinations as diverse as Mexico, Tuscany and Botswana.)
As we reported last year, Nayara Resorts is already behind two properties in Costa Rica: Nayara Gardens, a 50-bungalow property overlooking the Arenal Volcano, and Nayara Springs, an adults-only property. Guests at Nayara Tented Camp will be able to use the facilities at the sister lodgings; all three are connected by footbridges over the lush rainforest.
In planning its third property, Nayara Resorts launched a big reforestation project, planting more Cecropia trees in the surrounding area, thereby nurturing their sloth sanctuary (these trees are a main food source for the sloth). Perched on the hillside to allow views of the volcano, Nayara Tented Camp will have 29 air-conditioned accommodations sized at 1,496 square feet. Note that families traveling together can opt for a set of two tents connected by covered passageway. There are also standalone units for those seeking privacy. Expect canopy beds, plunge pools fed by natural springs, and double-headed outdoor showers.
Activities include nature walks with "Sloth Concierge" Juan Pablo, daily yoga and meditation in the treetops, and excursions to the Arenal Volcano. Coffee lovers will want to check out the new espresso bar called Mi Cafecito. Opened in 2018, it was created with master roaster Ken Palmer to champion sustainability in the bean-to-cup process.
