New in Costa Rica: Six Senses Papagayo

Six Senses Hotels Resorts Spas is headed to Costa Rica. The luxury wellness brand has partnered with The Canyon Group to develop the Six Senses Papagayo, which is scheduled to open in mid-2021 and will mark the first Six Senses property in Central America.

The site of the resort will stretch from the highest point of the Peninsula Papagayo, offering 360-degree views of the Guanacaste archipelago, to a forested beachfront with 41 pool villas. Plans also call for 31 residences available for sale.

The resort will host Six Senses’ signature wellness programming, along with a spa and fitness center and a variety of activities. An organic farm will be set in the heart of the property, growing fruits, vegetables and herbs to be used in both the chef’s menus and signature spa treatments.

The Canyon Group is a Larkspur, CA-based development company that also has the Amangiri resort in Utah and the Amangani resort in Wyoming among the properties in its portfolio. Along with Six Senses, the company has selected London-based architect John Heah, who helmed the Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan and Amanera in the Dominican Republic, to design the new resort in a nature-focused style with influences from Carlo Scarpa, Ed Tuttle and Frank Lloyd Wright.

Six Senses Papagayo will be approximately 40 minutes from Liberia International Airport.

The move brings a third luxury brand to the Peninsula Papagayo, which is also home to properties by Four Seasons and Andaz. Costa Rica as a whole has been a rising presence in the luxury travel space. While long known as an ecotourism destination, new and newly renovated hotel product—including a new Planet Hollywood resort just outside the Peninsula Papagayo development—has drawn luxury travelers looking to connect with nature without “roughing it,” leading our partner publication, Travel Agent, to name it one of its “Emerging Destinations” last year
