To support the growth of tourism in Southern Italy, VRetreats has added Palazzo Gattini to its portfolio. Since its inception in 2021 with just three properties, VRetreats has grown into a collection of nine hotels and historic residences across Italy. Alongside notable destinations including Cervinia, Venice, Florence, Rome, Taormina, Ortigia and Olbia, VRetreats now welcomes Matera, one of the oldest cities in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Palazzo Gattini stands at the highest point of Matera, overlooking Sassi. Once the residence of one of Matera’s most prominent noble families, the building underwent a restoration led by architect Ettore Mocchetti. In 2008, Palazzo Gattini was transformed into a luxurious hotel. The property now consists of 20 rooms, including suites, junior suites and deluxe rooms, along with an exclusive suite that has its own private pool on a terrace with views of the Murgia Materana Park. The interiors are clad in Mazzaro, a locally sourced stone that connects guests to the rich history of Matera’s centuries-old quarters.
Guests can savor classic regional flavors at Le Bubbole restaurant or enjoy an aperitivo or casual work break at Duomo Café—the only bar in the central Piazza Duomo. For private events, the hotel presents a roof garden and the Malvinni-Malvezzi Church, formerly the personal chapel of the Gattini family. Wellness offerings include a spa with a pool and massage area, set within ancient caves and cisterns carved from stone.
As for how to get there, Neos is expanding its international flight offerings with a new direct route from New York's JFK International Airport to Bari-Palese, operating from June 3 to October 15. This new route enables the airline to strengthen its business while contributing to the continued development of tourism in Italy. The flight will be operated by a 355-seat Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.
